Tesla & EV Towing in Colorado Springs

An electric motor is geared straight to the wheels, so rolling an EV on its own tires spins that motor whether the car is switched off or not. It is the same mechanism regenerative braking uses to turn motion back into current — except on a wheel-lift there is nothing managing where that current goes. That is why even a short pull down the block is a real drivetrain risk on a Tesla, Rivian, Mach-E, Lucid, Ioniq or EV6, and why the manufacturers all specify transport with all four wheels off the ground.

The other EV-specific problem is the battery. A high-voltage pack is the floor of the car and it is heavy — a Model Y is roughly 4,400 lbs and an R1T or F-150 Lightning is closer to 7,000 — but the pack enclosure is not a lift point. Our drivers work from the manufacturer's designated jack and tie-down locations and strap over the wheels rather than the underbody, so nothing bears on the battery case going up the deck or coming off it.

Most EVs also need a transport or tow mode engaged before they will roll freely: it releases the parking brake so the car can be winched onto the deck at walking speed, and it usually needs some charge left in the system to activate. Tell our dispatcher whether the car still powers up when you call. If it is completely dead we bring skates or dollies and move it that way — we would rather know before the truck leaves than work it out at the curb.

On a longer haul, remember an EV earns nothing back on a flatbed: the state of charge when we load it is the state of charge when we unload it. If your battery is low and the destination is a service center out of town, say so on the phone and we will plan the drop around a charger.
